CQC’s Recent Actions: Safeguarding Patients at Pier Health Group Limited Surgeries

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has recently taken significant action to safeguard the well-being of patients at Graham Road Surgery and Horizon Health Centre. Following inspections in May, both facilities have been rated as inadequate and placed in special measures. This move by the CQC aims to ensure the safety and quality of care for patients who use these services.

What were the CQC’s Findings?

During the inspections, the CQC identified several areas of concern at both Graham Road Surgery and Horizon Health Centre. These included a lack of action taken to address previous regulatory breaches, backlogs in crucial activities such as two-week referrals, and issues related to the administration of prescribed medicines. The CQC also raised concerns about the management of individual care records, access to patient information, safeguarding processes, infection prevention and control, and the handling of patient complaints.

Special Measures and Ongoing Monitoring

As a result of these findings, the CQC has placed both practices into special measures. Subsequently, this means they will be closely monitored and subject to re-inspection to track the progress of necessary improvements. The warning notices issued to the practices remain in place, emphasising the need for swift and effective changes to ensure patient safety.

Cath Campbell, the CQC deputy director of operations in the south, expressed disappointment with the lack of action taken to address the previously identified breaches in regulations at Graham Road Surgery and Horizon Health Centre.

“…We found that there were backlogs of activity such as two-week referrals, which meant people who were at risk of harm were not always receiving the treatment or care they required by an appropriate person in a timely way.

“People weren’t always receiving their prescribed medicines in line with national guidance. This is because the team were not always monitoring staff and what some non-medical prescribers were prescribing…”
