What is Cauda Equina Syndrome?

The medical condition cauda equina syndrome is a genuine medical emergency that, unless treated promptly, may result in a patient suffering permanent injury.

The cauda equina (Latin for horse’s tail) is a group of nerves located in the lower back, so called because they resemble a horse’s tail.

Prompt diagnosis and treatment is essential to reduce the risk of permanent debilitating injury.

What are the causes of Cauda Equina Syndrome?

Several things can be a catalyst for cauda equina syndrome, with some of the most common being:

  • Disc herniation – often at L4/L5 and L5/S1
  • Injury/trauma
  • Infections
  • Tumour
  • Spondylitis
  • Spinal manipulation
  • Sarcoidosis
  • Congenital conditions

There are “red flag symptoms” associated with this condition and sometimes clinicians fail to identify these symptoms and act upon them with the required urgency. Back pain is a common complaint for many people. However, it can be more serious than first thought when accompanied by red flag symptoms which could include one or more of the following:

  • any change in saddle sensation
  • any change in bladder or bowel function
  • severe or progressive loss of power in the lower limbs
  • bilateral leg pain and / or sensory disturbance

Cauda equina syndrome is a rare condition, which is why there is often a failure or delay in diagnosing it. We have acted for numerous clients who have suffered disabling / permanent medical problems due to a delay in diagnosis and treatment.
