Making Progress Against Spinal Muscular Atrophy: Supporting Marley’s Physiotherapy Journey

Bridge McFarland Supports Local Child Through Specialist Physiotherapy

At Bridge McFarland LLP, we are often reminded that behind every case and every cause we support, there are real people and families working incredibly hard to overcome life’s challenges.

Recently, members of our clinical negligence team visited Flex Health on Clough Road in Hull to see Marley in action during one of his physiotherapy sessions, and what a privilege it was.

Supporting Marley’s Journey with Spinal Muscular Atrophy

Over the past year, we have been proud to support Marley by funding specialist physiotherapy to help manage his condition, Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

SMA is a progressive condition that causes muscle weakness and wasting, and early, consistent intervention can make a meaningful difference to a child’s development and quality of life.

Marley’s parents turned to Flex Health for specialist physiotherapy support and, in their words, “have not looked back.” With regular sessions and dedicated home exercises, Marley has made remarkable progress.

Remarkable Progress Through Specialist Physiotherapy

Marley’s physiotherapist, Lisa Jenkins, explained that he has gone from being unable to sit unaided to now sitting independently for short periods, a milestone that once seemed out of reach. The sessions focus on improving flexibility, strength and movement, while also equipping Marley’s mum, Rosie, with techniques to continue vital exercises at home.

A Visit from Bridge McFarland’s Clinical Negligence Team

Nicola Evans, Partner in our Clinical Negligence Department, attended one of Marley’s physiotherapy sessions to meet Marley and his family in person.

During the visit, Marley was presented with a giant teddy bear, a small gesture for a very brave little boy. We were also delighted to confirm that Bridge McFarland will be funding a further 12 physiotherapy sessions to continue supporting Marley’s progress.

The Difference Support Can Make

Rosie described herself as “speechless” at the support Marley has received from both Bridge McFarland and Flex Health. She shared that our funding has enabled her to access the physiotherapy Marley deserves without the constant worry of how the sessions will be paid for.

As there is currently no NHS physiotherapy provision available to him, Marley’s parents continue to privately fund additional sessions wherever possible. Rosie said the improvement in Marley since beginning treatment has been incredible and expressed heartfelt gratitude for the continued investment in his wellbeing.

Raising Awareness of Spinal Muscular Atrophy

SMA has recently been highlighted in the national media following an announcement by singer Jesy Nelson that her twin babies have been diagnosed with the condition.

She has launched a petition calling for SMA to be included in the routine newborn heel prick screening test. Early identification is crucial, as access to revolutionary treatment in the earliest stages can help prevent irreversible damage.

A Message from Nicola Evans

Nicola Evans said: “It was a pleasure to meet Marley and his mum, Rosie. Their dedication to giving Marley the very best quality of life is inspiring. We are proud to be able to support that commitment through funding specialist physiotherapy. Seeing Marley sitting up for a photograph was a truly special moment, and we look forward to following his progress in the months ahead.”
