20th February 2026 is International Urogynaecology Awareness Day, which is dedicated to raising awareness about the vital field of urogynaecology.
In support of this campaign, our medical negligence team helps to provide more information on urogynaecology and the importance of pelvic health.
Do you know what a Urogynaecologist is?
They are specialist doctors working within the field of female pelvic health and the management of conditions that affect the pelvic organs, including bladder and gynaecological health.
Urogynaecologists also focus on diagnosing and treating pelvic floor disorders in women.
The pelvic floor is made up of a network of muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues that support various pelvic organs, such as the bladder, uterus, vagina, and rectum.
Why is this important?
International Urogynaecology Awareness Day, acknowledged annually on February 20th, is dedicated to raising awareness of urogynaecology and recognising the professionals working to improve women’s pelvic health worldwide. Although pelvic floor conditions are common, this important area of women’s health does not receive the care it deserves in many settings.
Women suffer with pelvic floor problems for many reasons. As medical negligence specialists we often instruct urogynaecology experts to help us to support women after suffering devastating consequences from negligence that cause avoidable pelvic floor problems. Examples can include:
- Childbirth complications including:
- Avoidable or missed tears
- Inappropriate episiotomy cuts or negligent repairs
- Failure to provide pelvic floor therapies
- Bladder management such as urinary retention and overdistention
- Mismanagement of vaginal prolapse complications
- Gynaecological cancer management
- Gynaecological cyst surgeries
