International Caesarean Awareness Month 2024

April is International Caesarean Awareness Month, an annual event organised by ICAN, the International Caesarean Awareness Network. The campaign is dedicated to raising awareness about surgical births, reducing unnecessary or preventable caesareans (c-sections) and supporting c-section recoveries. Caesarean abdominal births can be a lifesaving procedure, such as in an emergency during childbirth, and it is thought that nearly 1 in 3 babies are born via c-section in the UK every year. However, even though most of these are unplanned, or required for the safety of the mother or baby, some caesareans are preventable or performed unnecessarily.

Regardless of whether these are planned (elective C-section) or unplanned, many charities supporting the event are campaigning to increase access to evidence-based information and support while also helping to reduce the stigma about caesarean births.
